Notes from a father's first pregnancy
I’ve had three great loves in my life, kid, with the last, and most wonderful being your mother.
You’ll only get a few of these in your life. Sometimes, you might think, here and there, that you’ve found more or, if you’re lucky like your grandfather, you’ll find someone like my mother right off the bat. But most people aren’t as lucky.
And when you’re young, you’ll convince yourself that they’ll come frequently and forever, that these connections which can shake you to the very core of who you are always sitting just around the next corner or a few barstools down with long blonde hair and eyes that can shatter glass. But the older you get, the more you’ll realize how you only get a few of these.
These are important, kid, because they’ll teach you everything you need to know about life. For me, it came in three parts.
In the first love, I learned about her. I learned about women. The second taught me about the world. The third, your mother, taught me about myself.
