Those of you who know me know how passionate I am about bikes. Those of you who don’t, rest assured, there are few things I love more than riding bikes. Bikes were a lifelong love of mine that were reignited and redefined in a big way during the pandemic.
And so it only makes sense that much of my family’s recreation revolves around riding bikes together. Both of my kids taught themselves how to ride a pedal bike when they were barely three years old (all credit to the fact that we put them on balance bikes rather than training wheels. Seriously, if you get nothing else from this newsletter, get this: put your kids on balance bikes) and most Friday nights find us racing as a family—well, sans Emily, who is happily in charge of snacks as she chills on the sidelines—at our local BMX track.
Most Tuesday nights find us at a local trail system, mountain biking with a great kids-and-parents riding group. Someday soon, when my kids are old enough, we’re going to undertake bigger trips, multi-day bike packing journeys, several of which I have already mapped out.
Considering as much, parents often ask me my recommendations for kids’ bikes and there’s one name that comes straight out of my mouth every single time.
